Dale Fleming, vocalist
A San Diego native, Dale was raised in a household dedicated to service and steeped in music. As a child
she was enthralled by classical vocalist Marian Anderson and turned all her Sunday School songs into
arias, charging a quarter to sing for family embers.
As a child she became addicted to the Hollywood
musicals featuring the likes of Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly. In middle school [or what we
called Junior High, back in the day) she was drawn to Chaka Khan, Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder,
the Beatles, Journey, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Aretha Franklin. But through it all, as the
youngest child of a Baptist preacher, she was grounded by faith in God and in the church, and loved the
traditional songs, Negro Spirituals, anthems and hymns.
Today, Dale is a retired San Diego County health and human services administrator on the Board of
Trustees of the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, and volunteering with the nonprofit Martin Luther King
Jr. Community Choir San Diego, where she is one of their featured vocalists and a member of the Board.
She has performed with the San Diego Symphony, Lamb Players Theater, and provided background
vocals for a variety of local and nationally acclaimed artists, including Arnessa Jones, Dr. Rose Buchanan,
rock group Foreigner, the Reflection of San Diego, the Agape Allegro Chorale, and Lyle Lovette.
But her heart will always be in the music ministry based at the Bethel Baptist Church in San Diego under the
spiritual leadership of Senior Pastor John W. Ringgold and musical leadership of Patricia Maxwell. She
loves her family…a son and daughter, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, as well as her brother,
sister, nephews and nieces.
