Ken Anderson, Vocalist
Conductor M.L.K. Jr. Community Choir & Pianist
Kenneth Anderson is a talented musician, song writer, arranger, director, teacher and vocalist. He has a stellar reputation, and has shared his talents for 29 years as a choral instructor in the San Diego County elementary schools. Through his leadership in the San Diego County schools, Ken has exposed hundreds of elementary students to a variety of musical experiences. Ken Anderson, also the longtime director of UCSD’s Gospel Choir, was recently listed as the No. 3 top professor in the nation by RateMyProfessors.com, mainly because he can bring out the singing “voice” in just about anyone.
Ken has been the volunteer director of the MLK Choir since 1996. Under the inspired leadership of Ken Anderson, the MLKCCSD is now in its 21st season. The choir comprised of volunteer musicians, board members and administrative teams, raises funds through a series of concerts from September through June each year. Proceeds from the concerts are awarded in the form of educational grants, ranging from $1500 - $4000, to aspiring college-bound high school seniors from San Diego County who will major in the Visual and Performing Arts.
Ken sees himself as a classical singer rather than a gospel singer. He has sung ballads and opera in addition to gospel and says that his classical training carries over into his ability sing, play and teach music.
The roles he has sung include ‘Joe the Loiterer’ in the La Jolla Symphony production of the opera The Mother of Us All, and ‘Judas' in Jesus Christ Superstar. He played 'Dagoo’ in San Diego’s Opera’s Moby Dick, and was in the cast of Aida where he had the role of the ‘Celebrant' in the La Jolla Symphony Chorus’ production of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. He is incredibly proficient at the piano/keyboard, playing concert, gospel, and popular music. He has become internationally sophisticated as he travels abroad teaching and organizing gospel workshops.
Ken has led the choir on two European Tours; one in 2004: Prague, Czech Republic, Salzburg, Austria, Florence and Rome, Italy attending Easter services at the Vatican with Pope John II officiating. He led the MLK Choir on a second European tour, singing concerts in Denmark, Netherlands and traveling to Paris in 2009. Over Memorial Day weekend 2010 Ken took members of the MLK Choir to perform at Carnegie Hall’s 26th Anniversary Season in New York City. MLK has been invited to sing twice at Carnegie Hall. In 2016 the Choir was invited to sing in Vienna at the 2016 Vienna Sings event. He has also directed members of his college choir in a performance at Carnegie Hall. In September 2018 Ken led the choir singing in Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Kenneth Anderson has been a foster parent for many years, nurturing and raising eleven boys to adulthood. He is also the Senior Pastor to Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ
